I am very sorry that I have not updated my blog since my Amsterdam post. I have been extremely busy spending time with my host family and teaching at the schools. Here are some of the things I have done at my placement in Werne.
We decided to teach the third and fourth grade students at the elementary school a little bit about Kentucky. I read them "B is for Bluegrass" and decided to wear a coon skin cap while reading about Daniel Boone.
In this picture, Kelsey is talking to the students about the United States penny and how much it is worth. The students were also given their own penny to take home.
Johni, Kelsey, and I also taught the students our state song, "My Old Kentucky Home." We sang the song for the students and then we practiced reading through the words with them. Then we all sang together. The students did a wonderful job and they also sang their school song for us.

We read the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, to the first grade students. We practiced saying the different types of foods that the caterpillar ate in English with the students. Afterward we read the book to the students again and they drew their own butterfly. Then students participated in a museum where they have to walk around and look at each others drawings. Then they tell each other what they like about their drawing.
On the last day that we were at the elementary school, we taught the students about Christmas in America. Then we had the students tell us about their Christmas in Germany. We had to use a lot of pictures and actions to describe our Christmas and the teachers even translated or described what we were talking about to the students so that they would have a better understanding. We talked about what we would see and eat on Christmas in Germany along with Christmas traditions. It turns out that Christmas in America is very similar to Christmas in Germany.
This is the worksheet that the students filled out during the lesson. After the lesson, we sang a few Christmas songs.
