I have a ton of blogging to do in order to catch up! I have been so busy and I cannot believe that we only have 9 days left in Germany. It has flown by, but I am so grateful that I was able to experience this wonderful opportunity!
Johni, Kelsey, and myself cooked a mini Thanksgiving dinner for Johni's host family so that they could get a better picture as to what we do on Thanksgiving. After school, we all went to the supermarket. Since all of the items are in German, her lovely host sister Lana came along to make sure that we got the correct items. We were not able to get a whole turkey, but we were able to get a nice piece of turkey breast. Along with the we got the ingredients to make mashed potatoes, green beans, and pumpkin bread. It was very difficult to find canned pumpkin, so we got pumpkin in a honey mixture instead.
We took the bus to Johni's house and talked for a while before beginning our Thanksgiving feast. We decided to make the pumpkin bread first. Our plan was to begin my pureeing the pumpkin since it was in chunks. Well... our plan quickly changed when we opened that jar. It was pickled pumpkin in a honey sauce. Let me tell you what, it tasted awful. However, we stayed very hopeful. Luckily I had some molasses that I had brought to give to Heike for teaching, so we borrowed some of that to help. We had to add tons of extra sugar, molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, and just about every other ingredient. We were very hesitate a first, but once it got done baking, we tried a piece for safety measures. It was the BEST pumpkin bread I have ever had! We loved and so did Johni's host family. We had a lovely meal and got toe have a concert afterward. Johni's host sister along with Kelsey played the piano. Johni's host father played the accordion and we sang tons of different songs. It was a blast!!! Everything else that we cooked, turned out great! Below are some pictures that we took that evening.
